Introduction
The Skills Team at The Alan Turing Institute is pleased to announce a call for up to four Mentors to guide and support recipients of the Skills Policy Awards 2023/24. Grants of up to £15,000 are available for experienced data science education professionals to aid awardees in delivering a project and policy output benefitting the UK’s data skills policy landscape.
The mentorship period takes place between January 2023 – March 2024 for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of twelve months. Through a structured approach, and with support from the Skills Team, SPA Mentors will assist awardees in gaining valuable policy experience, developing their professional networks, and delivering an impactful data skills project. Mentors will have the opportunity to contribute to projects of critical importance to the national data skills landscape and strengthen their ties to national skills stakeholders.
This is an ideal opportunity for professionals across academia, the third sector, government, and industry with a demonstrated background in data skills/data science education policy and mentoring/providing leadership.
This work is supported by the Ecosystem Leadership Award under the EPSRC Grant EP/X03870X/1 and The Alan Turing Institute.
The grants
The Alan Turing Institute is offering up to four grants to individuals wishing to act as mentors for successful Skills Policy awardees and do hands-on work with the network of Turing’s national skills stakeholders. Mentors are matched with awardees to provide structured support to the awardees’ policy formation and undertake a project to address data skills challenges as well as supporting awardees with developing their network of connections.
The Turing will provide up to £15,000 to cover salary costs for mentorship. We typically expect mentors to commit to ~187 hours of staff time across the duration of a twelve-month project. Mentor commitments include project check-ins with relevant Skills Team members every two months, fortnightly mentee meetings and engagement with national skills stakeholder groups.
