The broad data science topics that are the focus of work in BT Research are outlined along with some of the progress and success that has been created by bringing together big data, analytics and machine learning. Some of the problems that we have encountered with scaling and managing data science are outlined. A program of work aimed at transforming the approach to extracting value from data by developing a “science of data” is described as our response to these issues”.
Simon has been doing applied research in AI for more than 20 years. Before he joined BT Research Simon did a Ph.D in Machine Learning at the University of Portsmouth and worked as a consultant. Simon worked creating reusable tools for intelligent and collaborative agent systems and created several applications of intelligent agents including a social CRM system that has been in production for nine years and has been used to handle several million service cases. Simon’s current responsibility is the development and leadership of big data and machine learning research at BT, and he leads a team of 20 researchers developing a variety of projects addressing a wide range of business areas – from interpreting the telemetry from the broadband network to understanding employee motivation.
