Office for National Statistics Scoping Workshop

Date: 12 January 2017

Time: 9:30 – 15:30

Location: The Alan Turing Institute

Following the signing earlier this month of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between The Alan Turing Institute and the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the two institutions are running a joint exploratory workshop to help to develop a mutually beneficial working relationship.

The key principles of the relationship are:

  • A shared desire to improve the status of Data Science
  • To develop research, innovation and additional capacity in the field of Data Science
  • To work collaboratively between the organisations
  • To share research and resources to improve knowledge and its exchange as needed

The workshop aims to identify possible collaborative projects which draw on the great data resources held by the ONS and the expertise of researchers from the Institute.

The meeting will be chaired by Professor Petros Dellaportas, Faculty Fellow at The Turing, and will include a small number of short presentations from data scientists based at the ONS’s newly established Data Science Campus in Newport.

These will be followed by break-out discussions to help identify specific areas of joint working which will advance the interests of both organisations in data science, in keeping with the key principles set out above.  Further details will be announced next week.
