Cities are (nonlinear) complex systems which provide interesting modelling challenges. At the core, is the task of modelling activities at locations and flows between locations (‘spatial interaction’). This can be done on an equilibrium cross-section basis Introduction (no advanced session planned) 15 or in an explicitly dynamic framework. The models are interesting in themselves and offer research challenges and opportunities for application. When looked at in a more abstract way, they offer tools for modelling other kinds of systems. The session will cover the basics of entropymaximising flow models and the Lotka-Volterra based dynamics of urban evolution. This is an introductory level class, no advanced session is planned.
