Dame Angela McLean, the UK Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser and Head of the Government Science and Engineering Profession has been announced as the keynote speaker for AI UK 2024, the UK’s national showcase of data science and artificial intelligence, hosted by The Alan Turing Institute.
Dame Angela's wealth of experience includes serving as the Chief Scientific Adviser for the Ministry of Defence and as a distinguished Professor of Mathematical Biology at Oxford University.
Other speakers announced today include technology writer Bill Thompson, Director of Foundational AI Research at the Turing, Professor Mike Wooldridge and comedian and broadcaster Timandra Harkness, with more to come.
The showcase, which takes place on March 19-20, boasts a diverse agenda with three stages and two days packed with panel sessions, interactive workshops, and in-depth talks exploring the latest trends and challenges in the AI landscape.
Panel sessions include thought-provoking topics such as "Is AGI really imminent?" and discussions on the application of AI in health and what children can teach us about AI. Interactive workshops offer practical insights into implementing AI ethics in the public sector, enabling access to NHS and Government data, and envisioning resilient and sustainable cities of the future.
In-depth talks will delve into critical issues, including understanding and mitigating online harm against women and girls, the development of cardiac digital twins, and modeling co-creation for policy. Attendees can also look forward to the return of PitchFest, engaging demonstration stands, and networking opportunities include the Long Table, presentation karaoke and an evening reception.

An early-career researcher’s conference will also take place on March 18 at the QEII Centre for researchers eager to build their network and skills.
