The Landscape Review by Sir Paul Nurse was commissioned in 2021 by the UK’s Secretary for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to explore existing research, development and innovation (RDI) happening in the UK. The report makes recommendations to improve the RDI landscape ensuring that organisations are effective and sustainable, and responsive to future priorities and developments.

Professor Sir Adrian Smith, Institute Director at The Alan Turing Institute, said: “The Turing was grateful for the opportunity to feed into this important review and are pleased to see its recognition of the critical role institutes can play in support of the UK's wider Research, Development and Innovation efforts, as well as some of the current challenges they face.

“We support Sir Paul Nurse's recommendations that such institutes are provided longer-term, end-to-end core funding and supported to reform governance and operating models to better align with their unique roles and advantages, including mission-driven approaches. The Review provides helpful clarity, especially around how we can better interact with and complement partners across the landscape, and we look forward to building on its findings and recommendations to deliver ambitious activity to drive the UK's long-term success in research, development and innovation.”
