Abstract
Monitoring online violence against high profile individuals
A poll commissioned by Amnesty International and carried out in eight countries revealed that 23% of women surveyed had experienced online abuse or harassment. Recently, Amnesty have launched Troll Patrol, a crowd-sourcing project aiming to detect and measure the amount and nature of abusive tweets directed at women.
The aim of this challenge is to understand how data science can be applied to the data collected as part of Troll Patrol, in order to better understand the phenomenon of online violence. A further aim is to to find automated ways of monitoring online abuse via the use of machine learning methods.
