The Turing's CETaS to provide the secretariat for the APPG on Technology and National Security

The group brings together cross-disciplinary experts to better understand the technology needed to protect national interests

Tuesday 11 Jul 2023

The Alan Turing Institute’s Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS) has announced today it is officially providing the secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Technology and National Security, chaired by Darren Jones, MP.

The APPG brings together parliamentarians with leading technologists and experts in national security to better understand the technology needed to protect national interests. The group aims to improve policy debates and government decision-making around technology and national security.

Alexander Babuta, Director of CETaS, said: “We're delighted to be supporting the APPG, which plays an important role in informing debates at the intersection of technology and national security.

"Our involvement comes at a critical time, when security risks associated with AI and other emerging technologies are more visible than ever. However, general understanding is still lacking about the security risks and opportunities presented by these new and emerging technologies. We look forward to collaborating with the APPG to improve knowledge and move the public conversation forward on these crucial issues.”

Darren Jones, MP, said: “Since the foundation of this APPG in 2020, the importance of raising awareness in Parliament of the national security implications of emerging technology has only grown.

"I am delighted to see CETaS fill this vital role as APPG secretariat and look forward to working together to further enhance parliamentary understanding of the opportunities and risks of these technologies.”

CETaS takes over the secretariat from the Oxford Changing Character of War Centre. The formal handover takes place today, July 11th 2023, at Portcullis House, before the first CETaS-organised APPG briefing on recent developments in generative AI and their implications for AI ethics and governance, national security, and democracy.

Providing the secretariat means CETaS will be responsible for administrative and communications support as well as organising all APPG events and briefings.
