Bio
Erin Quan is a computer science PhD student at University College London (UCL). She completed her master’s studies in computer science at UCL and her bachelor’s studies in finance at Indiana University Bloomington in the US. She worked as a data scientist at IBM before returning to UCL for her PhD research. Her research interests are in machine learning applications in environmental sciences.
Research interests
Erin Quan’s Turing related research is the development of custom machine learning methodologies for spatially-focused earthquake research. Her research explores the use of spatial information for earthquake forecasting, as recent work has indicated the potential value of working with two-dimensional data sets in which location information is preserved. In addition, she is also interested in fusing traditional seismic data with geodetic data (information about ground movements captured by remote sensing satellites) to incorporate earthquake precursory behaviours in her experiments to investigate the benefits of multi-modal data sets in machine learning models for earthquake research.
