Introduction
The Turing AI Fellowships are a £46 million initiative created as part of the AI Sector Deal’s ambitious skills and talent package aimed at retaining, attracting and developing the best and brightest AI international researchers. Fellows from a wide variety of disciplines undertake world-leading creative and innovative AI research, working in collaboration with partners from other sectors to accelerate the impact of their research.
The Turing AI Fellowships are delivered in partnership by The Alan Turing Institute, UK Research and Innovation, and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

Phases and cohorts of Turing AI Fellows
Turing AI Fellows have been appointed at intervals and with different titles based on their experience and expertise. They are appointed for five years, are members of one cohort, collectively known as Turing AI Fellows, and their start dates differ as follows.
2019 | The Turing AI Fellowship programme is launched with the appointment of four Turing AI Fellows and a Senior Turing AI Fellow. This initial part of the programme is delivered by The Alan Turing Institute. |
2020 | 15 Turing AI Acceleration Fellowships are announced. These fellowships aim to accelerate the careers of high potential researchers developing next generation AI technologies, towards a world leading position by the end of the fellowship. |
2021 | Five Turing AI World-leading Researcher Fellows are announced. These fellowships aim to retain and recruit the best international researchers in AI to build new capability and capacity in the UK. |
2023 | Two new Turing AI World-leading Researcher Fellows are announced. The Turing AI World-leading Researcher fellowship scheme expands to include Professor Alison Noble and Professor Michael Bronstein. |
2024 | Three new Turing AI World-leading Researcher Fellows are announced. Professor Subramanian Ramamoorthy, Professor Stefanos Zafeiriou, and Professor Steve Benford join a growing cohort of Turing AI World-Leading Researcher Fellows. |
The Institute supports the Turing AI Fellowships in a collaborative cohort management role, working with UKRI and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology to ensure the ambitious goals of the entire scheme are met. The Institute recruited and administered the first five Turing AI Fellows appointed in 2019.
