Bio
Shahina Begum has completed a MSc Statistics and Social Research Methods from the University of Manchester and worked as a Junior Statistician at King’s College London (UK Pregnancies Better Eating and Activity Trial/UPBEAT) . Following academia, Shahina has worked as a consultant for the last 4.5 years, where she focuses on health economics and evidence generation activities for pharmaceutical clients. She has experience in designing, implementing, and analysing many observational studies, including burden of illness and patient/payer/health care professional preference research. Shahina is currently a PhD student at the University of Exeter and Bristol studying genetic susceptibility to obesity via neural phenotypes and eating behaviours.
Research interests
Shahina’s PhD studies utilise data from two large UK cohort studies including genetic, eating behaviour, diet, adiposity and neuroimaging data. These data points incorporate a range of methodological challenges e.g. missing data, multiple testing and best statistical analysis practice. She aims apply new methods to optimise the data quality and analyses in order to accelerate understanding of genetic susceptibility to obesity. She is also learning about how to model longitudinal data within the structural equation framework using statistical software such as R and Stata.
