Bio
Trystan is a PhD student in the Satellite Ice Dynamics group in the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science, University of Leeds. He did is undergraduate degree in physics at the University of Oxford from 2015-2018, before going on to study for a masters in mathematical and theoretical physics at Nottingham University. He began his PhD working on AI, remote sensing and the study of the Antarctic ice sheet in 2020, under the supervision of Dr Anna Hogg, Dr Stephen Cornford and Professor David Hogg.
Research interests
Trystan's work focusses on understanding "damage" on the Antarctic ice sheet. This involves mapping crevasses using remote sensing data in combination with deep learning/computer vision techniques, and assessing the impact that damage and fracture processes have on ice mass loss. The latter requires the use of existing ice sheet models, and the development of new ones. As part of his research, Trystan is working on the development of differentiable numerical models with the aim of helping resolve some of the outstanding issues in the process modelling of ice fracture.
