James works as a Research Software Engineer for the British Antarctic Survey' AI Lab. With extensive software development expertise from numerous industry and several seasons spent in Antarctica, he focuses now on developing tools, platforms and infrastructures that support polar science and data centric engineering projects.
He is actively involved in the development of the BAS Digital Twin programmes and help guide sustainable development of these initiatives. He is also an advocate for best practice in software development throughout the organisation, championing the importance of software to cutting edge polar science and working to establish open communities within the organisation. On this basis, he joined the 2022 roster of fellows for the Software Sustainability Institute to help open these efforts up to the wider RSE community.
