Dr Donaldson’s research interests are primarily associated with quantum communication technologies. He has worked on a range of next-generation quantum communications technologies throughout his research career, including quantum digital signatures, quantum amplification, quantum random number generation, and single-photon array detectors. His main research interests include: Novel photonic and optical devices for optical ground stations. Satellite and high-altitude platform based quantum communications. Quantum communication technology for space.
As part of his Research Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering, Dr Donaldson works with industrial partners to transfer technology from in-lab demonstrations out into industry. For his Research Fellowship, Dr Donaldson is associated with two established research groups at Heriot-Watt University; the Single-Photon Group (www.single-photon.com) and the Mostly Quantum Group (http://www.mostlyquantum.org).
