Bio
SJ Bennett is a Research Associate in Data Justice and Global Ethical Futures in Public Policy at The Alan Turing Institute, and co-organises the AI Ethics and Society group based in Edinburgh. Their research examines ethical and social dimensions of AI, with a particular interest in applying relational ethics and data justice principles to AI practice. Their current work includes the Turing Commons and advancing Data Justice projects in the Ethics & Responsible Innovation theme.
SJ previously held a position as a Research Associate in the Centre for Technomoral Futures at the University of Edinburgh, developing a Care Ethics-based approach to ethical governance of Data Collaboratives in collaboration with the Data for Children Collaborative. They have also worked on projects focused on ethical development of AI art and personal informatics tools for people living with HIV.
Research interests
SJ has an interdisciplinary background in health informatics, AI and HCI. In their current work they draw from Critical Data Studies, Philosophy of Technology, Data Justice and feminist ethics to inform their academic research and shape development of practical ethical tools for AI practice.
