Bio

James is a Lead Research Software Engineer at the Turing. He is passionate about increasing the impact of research by making it reproducible and reusable through adapting software engineering best practices to the research realm. He has a PhD in particle physics and, prior to joining the Turing, spent ten years working at CERN where he was part of the team that discovered the Higgs Boson.

James has worked across all the strategic research areas at the Turing, on projects ranging from air quality prediction and statistical sampling toolkits to identifying online misinformation

Research interests

James leads the Trusted Research team where he has developed an open-source, reproducible cloud-based solution for securely analysing sensitive data. This has been deployed in production at the Turing and other organisations to allow secure and productive research on sensitive data. He was also one of the founding members of the UK-wide UK TRE trusted research environment community, where issues around trusted research are discussed at a national scale.

James is also one of the engineering leads for the Environment and Sustainability Grand Challenge, where he has applied state-of-the-art AI techniques to numerical weather prediction, solar nowcasting and sea ice forecasting.
