Bio
Dr Stuart E. Middleton is a Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Southampton. He has made internationally recognized contributions to research into the natural language processing (NLP) and information extraction, with a research focus on socio-technical NLP, especially around inter-disciplinary research teams and human-in-the-loop AI methodologies for mental health, security, defence and environmental sciences.
Research interests
He is currently PI of NERC-funded platform grant GloSAT (Global Surface Air Temperature using NLP for data rescue) and UKRI Trustworthy Autonomous Systems (TAS) Hub funded SafeSpacesNLP (Behaviour classification NLP for online harmful behaviours for children and young people). He is CoI of ESRC-funded grant FloraGuard (Tackling the illegal trade in endangered plants using criminal behaviour classification) and ESRC-funded ProTechThem (Building awareness for safer and technology-savvy sharenting using behaviour classification). He also serves as a defence and security sector lead for the UKRI TAS Hub.
