Introduction

AI and data science will improve the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of illness. They will optimise the provision of services, and support health service providers to anticipate demand and deliver improved patient care.

The Turing’s health programme will deliver a schedule of major research into the theory and methods of AI, statistics, and data analytics underpinning medical and health applications that will enable scientists to do better science, without compromising respect for privacy and patient trust.

Using data-driven innovation in AI and statistical science, the we aim to accelerate the scientific understanding of human disease and improve human health.

The programme will grow cross-sector collaborations across the Institute’s growing university network, creating opportunities with the six substantive sites of Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) and the broader health and data science sector.

It will build on an already established set of health science projects underway at the Turing. This includes partnerships with Cystic Fibrosis Trust applying machine learning to improve treatment plans; a set of interdisciplinary projects funded jointly with the British Heart Foundation through the BHF-Turing Cardiovascular Data Science Awards; and cross-cutting foundational research looking into data security and privacy.

The Turing-RSS Health Data Lab

The Turing-RSS Health Data Lab is a working partnership between The Alan Turing Institute and Royal Statistical Society (RSS) supporting the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) providing an independent source of statistical modelling and machine learning expertise to address policy-relevant research questions.

The Turing-RSS Health Data Lab also produce the International Lecture Series; Monthly lectures that host world experts to present on some of the hot topics within the field of machine learning and data science with particular focus on the response to COVID-19.

The Turing-Roche partnership

The Turing-Roche strategic partnership was established in the summer of 2021 and is a five-year partnership focused on advanced analytics that is working to better understand patient and disease heterogeneity and its relevance to clinical outcomes to improve clinical care.

Our partnership will cover multiple activities to investigate how and why diseases affect people differently and why responses to treatment can vary. We will continue to build upon the connections and collaboration opportunities between The Alan Turing Institute, Roche, and the wider community.

We will be launching further research themes this year as well as building our community through activities such as our Slack Workspace, knowledge share series and newsletter.
