Introduction

Day to day we collaborate with technical and subject matter experts from our partner organisations as well as academics, software engineers, and data scientists from across the Turing’s research community. We work in domains as diverse as: subthreshold activity (cyber-attacks, electronic warfare), future sensing, space systems, communications and networks, and human-machine teaming. We apply existing AI algorithms and techniques and build hardware prototypes as well as fundamentally advance the state of the art of AI.

Explaining the science

We have two key themes for DARe that have been identified as priority areas of research: (1) vulnerabilities, deception, and disinformation (VDD) and (2) Edge AI.

Vulnerabilities, deception, disinformation (VDD)

We currently have strong stakeholder engagement for three projects under the VDD theme:

  • The autonomous suggestion of plausible responses to subthreshold activity in the information domain (defined as ‘operations and/or activities carried out with the intention of affecting a competing power, but which will not result in reasonable grounds for retaliatory military action’, also known as ‘hybrid warfare’ or ‘grey zone’ operations). The focus is on activity that is either ambiguous in nature or not easily attributable to a particular individual, group, or state-actor e.g. deepfakes, bots.
  • Exploring the vulnerabilities of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms for automated synthetic aperture radar detectors and classifiers.
  • The use of large language models for defence & security problem sets.

Edge AI

The edge AI project is focused on performing Artificial intelligence/machine learning in resource constrained environments where you are limited in size weight and power (SWaP) and need to analyse data and react to input in real time without transmitting back to the cloud.

  • We are developing an edge AI project that will be focused on a red vs blue mission to capture a flag using UAVs in a degraded communications environment.
