Introduction
This pilot internship programme for summer 2024, in collaboration with The Alan Turing Institute’s Defence and Security partners, will provide up to eight undergraduate internships. The overall aim of the programme is to increase participation in Data Science (DS) careers from people who are from underrepresented backgrounds with a focus on those from a lower socio-economic background. The programme is open to undergraduates registered at a UK university, who have completed at least their second year (by 1 July 2024) and are on track to achieve a 2.1/60% in their overall degree.
About the Defence and Security internship
This is a paid full time summer internship for 8 weeks over summer 2024 for undergraduate students, focussing on challenge-based Data Science and Artificial Intelligence work, facilitated in small groups or individually. All projects are drawn from existing Data Science and Security Projects or those of our partners. The internship programme will include experiential and skills-based elements including possible visits to partners, careers information and networking sessions.
Interns will be matched with a mentor for up to 6 months during and after their programme. Mentors will be drawn from across The Alan Turing Institute.
Eligibility
Students must meet ALL following eligibility criteria to be considered for the programme:
- Be willing to undergo security checks undertaken by The Alan Turing Institute’s Defence and Security partners.
- Be an undergraduate at a UK university.
- Be studying in their 2nd or 3rd year (3rd year of a 4-year course).
- Be on track to achieve a 2.1/60% at the end of undergraduate degree.*
- Have skills and knowledge in data science, AI, or programming background. See individual project specifications.
- Meet criteria for lower socio-economic background. This will be established by sharing information about at least one of the following: **
- What was the occupation of your main household earner when you were aged about 14?
- If you finished school after 1980, were you eligible for free school meals at any point during your school years?
- Did either of your parents attend university by the time you were 18?
- Course/tutor is willing to give a reference to support application. Requested at time of informal offer.
