We invite UK-based researchers in data science and artificial intelligence (AI) to apply for short-stay research visits to Italian research organisations. The purpose of the visits will be to enable the development of bilateral and multilateral projects in Trustworthy AI and to bootstrap future collaborations between the two scientific communities. Funding will be provided of up to £4,500 to support the trip (awarded on the basis of receipts after the trip is completed and upon submission of a short, final report, for which a form will be provided).
This joint scheme in collaboration with the Italian Future AI Research Foundation (FAIR) will support travel and accommodation for UK researchers to spend two weeks at an Italian University or research centre to discuss issues around Trustworthy AI. We especially invite proposals relating Trustworthy AI to the Institute’s new strategy and its three grand challenges in the defence and security, environment and sustainability and healthcare domains. However, we will also prioritise proposals which expect to lead to larger funding applications and which reflect a substantial existing or future collaborative research partnership.
Researchers involved in the programme may be invited to participate in a final workshop to present on new lines of work and cooperation which stemmed from the exchanges and inform policymakers about the main issues which will impact AI regulation.
Available funding
Successful applicants will be able to claim expenses up to £4,500 from The Alan Turing Institute to support their research visit. Expenses will be reimbursed to applicants after the visit report has been received.
Eligibility
Early to mid-career researchers affiliated with UK-based universities and research institutions are invited to apply for the programme. Early career can include students in UK Doctoral programmes (MA programme ineligible). People of any nationality are eligible as long as they are enrolled or employed at a UK research organisation (including on a doctoral programme) and qualify for an Italian research visa. Prior to applying, applicants need to organise a letter of invitation from an Italian research organisation. The Turing may be able to recommend possible collaborators. Please reach out to [email protected]
While visa costs are eligible for reimbursement under the scheme, the applicant is solely responsible for applying for a visa. The scheme is not able to support applications beyond reimbursing costs of successful research visits.
How to apply
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until 31 September 2023. The application portal opens on 1 June 2023 and closes for the first phase of applications on 31 September 2023. Depending on resourcing, the call may be re-opened for a second round of applications. All travel must be completed and receipts submitted within 2 months from notification of success.
Applications must be submitted via the online portal at https://ati.flexigrant.com/. If you have not already done so, all applicants must first register on the system and provide basic details to create a profile. If you have any questions regarding the application form or using the online system, please contact [email protected].
